Nils Landgren wins Sir George Martin Music Award
Nils Landgren is a trombonist, singer, bandmaster, arranger, professor, concert organiser, and an inexhaustible ambassador for Swedish music around the world. His multi-facetted musical life, together with his open approach to music, has led to exciting cooperation with a large number of musicians and artists. He has released over twenty albums, several of which were made together with his own band “Funk Unit”. He is often seen in roles such as artistic director for big bands and festivals, producer for other artists, and project manager for various projects both locally and globally.
The governing board for the Sir George Martin Music Award also underscored that:
Just as George Martin once started “The British Invasion”, Nils Landgren has led a Swedish jazz wave. Nils Landgren is a diverse, bold, and enthusiastic musician who from his base in Skåne, southern Sweden, sees a world without borders.

World travellers making multicultural rhythms ranging from minimalism to groovy sounds from Denmark — Marilyn Mazur + Makiko Hirabayashi Live in Saarbrücken
Last night Ginger and I went to see + hear Makiko Hirabayashi and Marilyn Mazur play some of their newest pieces of music (some of which have not yet been recorded). The trio was rounded out by Marilyn’s husband, Klavs Hovman.
Several things about the trio reminded me of E.S.T. — though the music is of course quite different. First of all, their level of play was of course very high, but not only that: each of the three seem to be very good at listening to each other and playing together very well. This results in a “group” style of music, rather than one in which the members are simply pieced together individual talents.
There was a great deal of variation in the pieces — even though (as I said to Makiko after the show) not only Marilyn but also Makiko herself had a very percussive style of playing… and she herself admitted that when playing with Marilyn, there is almost no choice but to feel the percussion!
The two also sort of reminded me at times of Steve Reich split into two parts: one drumming, the other playing the piano. However, I have this notion of sentence-length in the expression of music… — and whereas Esbjörn Svensson used to play long run-on sentences and Steve Reich might play many repetitions of very similar, very short sentences, both Marilyn and Makiko would play short sentences, but with much variation into wandering, almost rambling paragraphs — yet always with an underlying theme (and Klavs would always remind all of this underlying and recurring theme with very reliable yet also very nuanced bass playing).
All three are very approachable and have very friendly personalities. They have wonderful stories to tell, many stories… and without any need for words.

The concert was recorded live and will be broadcast via SR2.de on the 25th of January 2012.

Nothing Lasts
Great song by the Steve Miller Band (too bad there’s no Norton Buffalo playing harmonica on this recording)…
All the things you think and say
Float away into space
Done in thought or done in haste
They have no place, they leave no trace
All the things you think and do
Have become a part of you
All your deeds have come to pass
Nothing lasts, nothing lasts
Like a river flowing past your windowpane
Life’s never the same
Like the sun you’re born to set
You’ll die in sin
And be born once again
Now you know, so damn well
That your life is a heaven and a hell
And it’s very easy to tell
When you’re sick and when you’re well
So the secret to this life
Is so very easy to learn
If you ever love another
Never ask for anything in return
Like a river flowing past your windowpane
Life’s never the same
Like the sun you’re born to set
You’ll die in sin
And be born once again
All the things you think and say
Float away into space
Done in thought or done in haste
They have no place, they leave no trace
All the things you think and do
Have become a part of you
All your deeds have come to pass
Nothing lasts, nothing lasts
